Technology Trainee – Middle and Back Office Developer

What is Middle and Back Office? Within Finance, Middle and Back Office refer to business functions that occur post trade, this includes trade settlement and confirmation, calculating and managing various measures of risk, as well as regulatory reporting of the firms business to regulatory bodies, such as the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK.  The Middle and Back Office development team sits within the Technology Division to support and facilitate a variety of business functions. 
What is the role? As a Technology trainee in Middle and Back Office, successful candidates will have an important role providing additional Middle and Back Office capabilities through new systems developed in-house. There will also be work on the “business as usual” programme to ensure fixes, upgrades and enhancements to the systems are delivered in a controlled and timely manner. Other duties will eventually include second-line support for the team’s applications and technical input to strategic projects and the future direction of DCME software architecture. Trainees will also work with other internal technology teams that provide database, server, network, and shared storage technologies to application developers.

it suit me?
A key aspect of this position is the breadth of business areas that fall into the Middle and Back Office umbrella. This includes Operations, Credit Risk, Market Risk, Finance, and Compliance amongst others. The role involves interaction with various business and support teams on support procedures, documentation, training and identifying areas for improvement – candidates need to be comfortable with these non-coding aspects of the role. There will be technical and business challenges requiring thought and analysis. Candidates should enjoy problem solving and be able to think laterally to formulate a solution and must be willing to work flexibly to meet deadlines.  Candidates will get exposure to the full technical stack the team supports: Java 8-11 services running on Linux. Front-ends are developed using Angular. Stack also comprises of SpringBoot, MSSQL Server, MongoDb, Elasticsearch, EMS, and Camel. Upcoming projects will also involve Openshift / containerisation.
What do you expect from me? Candidates will need to have a good understanding of Computer Science fundamentals, with a solid knowledge of object-orientated programming, ideally with Java.  We also require relational database skills and competence using Linux and Windows operating systems. Candidates will need to demonstrate that they are team players and have excellent communication skills with a real enthusiasm for technology.
And what qualifications do I need? We will consider candidates with a minimum of an upper second in any relevant degree that is likely to have a strong Computer Science bias. If you are successful, we will support you to study for a relevant professional qualification in Finance and you will receive additional technical skills training.
